Recruiter call, leadership interviews, technical round and final loop

Engineering manager interviews focus on people leadership, delivery and technical judgement. Expect behavioural rounds on hiring, performance management, giving difficult feedback and building team culture, an execution round about planning and delivering under pressure, and a technical round that is often a system design discussion or a review of your team's architecture. Some companies still include a light coding round. Interviewers want specific examples with names removed but details intact: how you handled an underperformer, how you grew someone into a senior role, how you pushed back on an unrealistic deadline. Strong candidates show they care about people and outcomes equally.

Frequently asked questions

What questions are asked in an engineering manager interview?

Expect questions about handling underperformance, giving tough feedback, hiring, growing engineers, resolving conflict, managing delivery under pressure and working with product. Most loops also include a system design or architecture discussion.

Do engineering managers need to code in interviews?

Some companies include a light coding round, but most focus on system design and technical decision making. You should be able to discuss architecture and trade-offs confidently.

How should I structure leadership stories?

Use situation, action and result, but spend most time on what you did and why. Include the human side, such as how the person felt, and the outcome for both the individual and the team.

What is a red flag in engineering manager interviews?

Blaming individuals, having no examples of difficult conversations, taking credit for team work, or showing no interest in developing people are common red flags.
